RESUMO

The study of the effect of sodium mefenaminate on radiation resistance of rats yielded positive results. Clinical investigations showed mefenamic acid to decrease the activity of cathepsin D-like protease in colonic cancer tissue. The acid failed to affect the proteolytic activity of the normal mucosa. It revealed an immunomodulating activity and influenced the hemostatic system which usually manifested itself in amelioration of hypercoagulation.

RESUMO

Plasmapheresis with exfusion of 30-60% circulating plasma volume has been first used in combination with conventional drug therapy for the prevention of postoperative thromboembolic complications in cancer patients at risk of thrombosis (II-III stage lung cancer). The use of plasmapheresis made it possible to reduce the incidence of postoperative thromboembolic complications by 40.6% and to decrease postoperative lethality.

RESUMO

To correct hemostasis, 32 patients with lung carcinoma underwent plasmapheresis with exfusion of 50% the circulating plasma volume one day before surgery. Plasmapheresis was coupled with the conventional drug therapy. As compared with the control group patients (n-32) who did not receive plasmapheresis, the main group patients demonstrated that the use of the multimodality correcting therapy made all the components of hemostasis return to normal and minimized the rate of postoperative thromboembolic complications by 40.6% and the postoperative lethality by 18.7%.

RESUMO

A hypothesis on blocking factor formation in carcinogenesis is discussed. Destabilisation of cell membranes and increased levels of proteolytic enzymes in tumor tissue are considered to be the trigger mechanism. Protease level in large bowel tumor was found to be higher than in normal tissue. Plasminogen level in cancer patients was significantly higher than in healthy subjects. Application of different experimental schemes of treatment with membrane-stabilizing drugs and an inhibitor of protease was followed by antitumor and antiblocking effects. Sorption of rheumatoid factor and immune complexes from plasma led to a decrease in the blocking activity of plasma in vitro. In cases of rectal cancer, plasmapheresis was followed by tumor regression and a fall in immune complex concentration.

RESUMO

The immunological status was examined in 106 patients with cancer of the stomach, who were subjected to different operative interventions. 74 of them were considered to be operable and 32-inoperable. The immunological activity was compared (according to the tests of cell immunity and general immunological reactivity) in aggressive--unfavourable and torpid-favourable course of the disease. A torpid course of the lesion after surgery for gastric cancer was associated with stabilization and some activation of immune response indices. However, radical operations fail to provide the normalization of these tests, and the state of immune depression in the patients would persist. An aggressive course of the lesion after surgery for gastric cancer was associated with considerable shifts in immunological tests indices toward their suppression, these being increased with the approach of patient's death.
